Accidents happen, especially with puppies, older pets, or a new rug in a new spot. What you do in the first few minutes makes a difference.
Right away
- Blot, don’t scrub. Press a clean, white towel or paper towels into the spot to soak up as much as you can. Scrubbing pushes it deeper and can rough up the fibers.
- Work from the outside in, so the spot doesn’t spread.
- Use cool water, not hot. A little cool water, then blot again.
What to avoid
- Strong household cleaners and bleach. They can discolor the rug and are not something you want your pet near.
- Heat. Hair dryers and hot water can make some stains harder to remove.
- Soaking the rug. Too much water can reach the backing and the floor underneath.
When to call a professional
- The spot is large, old, or keeps coming back.
- The rug is valuable, delicate, or the colors look like they might run.
- The same spot has had several accidents.
An honest word about odor
Fresh accidents usually have the best chance. Old urine can damage rug fibers and backing, and some of that can’t be undone. That is why we never promise that a smell will be gone, and our guarantee doesn’t cover odor results. Before we start, we look at the rug with you and tell you what we see.
