You spend a lot of time on your mattress, but it rarely gets cleaned. A few easy habits keep it in better shape.
A simple routine
- Use a mattress protector. A washable cover is the easiest way to keep spills and sweat off the mattress itself.
- Wash your sheets and protector regularly. Hot enough to get them clean, following the care label.
- Vacuum the mattress now and then, using the upholstery tool, when you change the sheets.
- Let it breathe. On a dry, sunny day, leave the bed unmade for a few hours with a window open.
Spills and accidents
- Strip the bed and blot up as much as you can with a clean, white towel. Don’t scrub.
- Blot with a little cool water, then blot dry again.
- Don’t soak the mattress. Too much water is hard to get out.
- Let it dry completely before you put sheets back on. A fan helps.
When a professional cleaning helps
- Stains or accidents that home cleaning didn’t fix.
- Before a new baby moves into a bed or a nursery.
- A guest room bed that hasn’t been used in a long time.
