How to choose a carpet cleaner

Updated October 2026

Most bad carpet cleaning stories start the same way: a low price online, and a much bigger number once the cleaner is in your living room. A few questions before you book can save you from that.

1. Will I get the price in writing before you start?

Ask for the exact price, written down, before any work begins. Then ask whether that price can change once the work starts. The answer you want is no.

2. Is there a minimum?

Many cleaners have a minimum charge for a visit. That is normal. What matters is that you know it up front.

3. Be careful with very low per-room prices

A very low price per room can grow fast once extra charges are added on site. Ask what is included, and what would cost more.

4. What products do you use?

If you have kids or pets, ask whether the products are non-toxic and safe for them. Ask whether they carry a recognized certification.

5. Are you insured? Are your technicians background-checked?

Someone is coming into your home. It is fair to ask.

6. What happens if I’m not happy?

Ask about their guarantee, how long you have to report a problem, and what they will do about it. Ask what the guarantee does not cover, too. For example, no honest cleaner can promise that every stain or every pet smell will be gone.

7. What do recent reviews say?

Read recent reviews on the site where they were posted, like Google or Yelp, not only the ones a company picks for its own website. Look for comments about price, being on time, and how problems were handled.
